Luxury vans from Ultimate Toys, Midwest, OGV, Grech, Battisti, LA West, Becker and custom builders are often bought from another state. That widens your choice, but it also means you may not see the van until it arrives. A steady checklist protects you more than speed does. This is practical guidance, not legal advice; your state's title and tax rules always apply.
1. Confirm the exact van
Get the full VIN in writing and match it to photos of the VIN plate and the title. Every check below depends on that number.
2. Confirm who is selling
Verify the seller's or dealer's legal name, address and phone through sources you find yourself, not only through the listing.
3. Check title state and liens
Ask which state issued the title, whose name is on it, and whether any lender holds a lien. If there is a loan, get the payoff process in writing.
4. Pull an NMVTIS report
The Department of Justice NMVTIS FAQ explains that consumer reports include current and previous state title data, the title issue date, the latest odometer reading, theft history, brands and salvage history. They do not include everything, such as repair history, so pair the report with an inspection. The NMVTIS buying tips recommend both an independent inspection and a report before you buy.
5. Run a recall lookup
The NHTSA recall lookup shows unrepaired safety recalls by VIN or plate. It is not a mechanical or conversion inspection.
6. Arrange an independent inspection
Ask an inspector to cover the chassis and the conversion: electrical systems, seating, water systems if fitted, and finish work. The FTC's used-car dealer guidance recommends requesting an independent inspection, and its online buying alert repeats that advice and notes that dealers must post a Buyers Guide.
7. Get the out-the-door price in writing
The FTC's dealer advertising guidance suggests getting the written out-the-door price before you visit or finance. Include taxes, fees, delivery and any add-ons.
8. Put the equipment list and promises in writing
List the build and equipment exactly. The FTC used-car guidance says to get promises in writing, check whether the sale is as is or includes a warranty, and understand the return policy. It also notes federal law does not generally require a three-day cancellation period.
9. Verify payment instructions independently
Before wiring, call the seller at a number you have confirmed separately and read back the bank details. Treat any last-minute change to instructions as a reason to stop and verify again.
10. Agree on delivery terms
Clarify who arranges transport, when ownership and risk pass, and who is responsible for damage in transit. Document condition at pickup and delivery with dated photos.
11. Sign before funds move
Have a signed bill of sale or purchase agreement that names the VIN, price, equipment and delivery terms before you send money.

Honest tradeoffs
Inspections and reports cost time and money, and a good van can sell while you wait. Still, a few days spent confirming facts is usually cheaper than fixing a surprise later. If a seller resists reasonable checks, that tells you something too.
When you review current listings, treat prices, mileage, equipment and availability as the seller's description and confirm each one. If nothing fits, the van builder lets you sketch the layout you want.
