A used luxury van can have low mileage and still need tires. Long periods of storage, heat, sunlight, underinflation and heavy loads can age a tire before the tread looks worn. On a converted Sprinter, the tires also carry cabinetry, captain’s chairs, batteries, water and other equipment that a bare chassis did not have.
A tire check should be part of every pre-purchase inspection—not a quick glance after the deal.
Start with the vehicle label, not the tire sidewall
The correct cold inflation pressure comes from the vehicle’s tire-and-loading label or owner’s manual. It is not automatically the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall. NHTSA’s TireWise guidance specifically directs owners to the driver-side label and recommends checking pressure when tires are cold.
Photograph the label inside the driver’s door area and record:
- specified tire size;
- recommended front and rear cold pressures;
- GVWR and front/rear GAWR;
- rim size;
- any converter or alterer labels beside the original label.

Decode the tire’s age
Find the DOT Tire Identification Number on the sidewall. The final four digits identify the week and year of manufacture: for example, 2323 means the 23rd week of 2023. The full code may appear on only one side, so inspect the inner sidewall too.
NHTSA says some vehicle and tire manufacturers recommend replacement when tires are six to ten years old regardless of tread depth. That is a range, not a universal expiration date. Follow the van manufacturer’s and tire maker’s instructions, and have an older tire evaluated by a qualified professional.
Check every tire, including the spare. A spare with unused tread may be the oldest tire on the vehicle.
Match size and load capacity
A replacement tire needs more than the right diameter. Confirm its complete size, construction, load range or load index, speed rating and intended service against the vehicle label and manufacturer guidance.
For a dual-rear-wheel van, also check:
- whether all tires on the axle are the correct matched size;
- adequate spacing between the paired tires;
- damage on both inner sidewalls;
- accessible valve stems and working extensions;
- uneven wear between the inner and outer tire;
- stones or debris trapped between the duals.
Never assume an attractive aftermarket wheel-and-tire package preserved the original load capacity. Ask for the wheel rating, tire specifications and installation invoice.
Inspect condition systematically
Use bright light and look at the entire circumference and both sidewalls. Flag:

NHTSA recommends monthly tread and pressure checks and notes that tires should be replaced for damage, irregular wear or inability to maintain pressure—not only low tread.
TPMS is a warning system, not a pressure gauge substitute
A functioning tire-pressure monitoring system is valuable, but NHTSA explains that the warning normally appears only after a tire is significantly underinflated. Check each tire with an accurate gauge when cold.
During a test drive, confirm the TPMS warning lamp illuminates during the normal startup check and then goes out. A flashing lamp followed by steady illumination can indicate a system malfunction. Aftermarket wheels or valve stems may lack compatible sensors.
Weigh the finished van
A generic chassis specification cannot tell you how much a particular conversion weighs. Obtain a certified scale ticket with representative fuel and equipment, preferably with individual axle weights.
Then compare:
- total weight with GVWR;
- front axle weight with front GAWR;
- rear axle weight with rear GAWR;
- tire capacity on each axle;
- remaining allowance for passengers, luggage, water and hitch load.
A van can be below GVWR and still overload the rear axle or a tire. This is especially important when a rear bathroom, large battery bank, generator, hitch carrier or trailer tongue weight is present.

Price the correction before you negotiate
If replacement is due, request a written quote for the correct commercial-grade tires, mounting, balancing, valve hardware, TPMS service and alignment. A six-tire dually replacement is a different budget from a four-tire single-rear-wheel van.
Also check whether the tire model or size is subject to a safety recall through the NHTSA tire recall search. Keep the purchase invoice and DOT codes for future warranty or recall questions.
The bottom line
Fresh-looking tread is not enough. The best used luxury-van tire story includes correct specifications, compatible wheels, recent date codes, even wear, cold pressures that match the label, a working TPMS and scale weights comfortably inside every rating.
